4Runner Crew off Road Sesh
By Shirley Peek
October 31st through early May is considered “desert season” in Southeast California, for obvious reasons, the heat. The summer months of the year are mountain or beach season. It’s a Cali playground all year long. The deserts are the most spacious, and there is something for everyone.
Off-roading and camping are the most visible, with the majority of the area being covered in off-road trails and open spaces. And with that comes motorhomes, Connex boxes, and toy haulers. Circle the wagons, and have fun with your friends. People race Off-road vehicles, 4 x 4’s, side-by-side’s, four-wheelers, and motorbikes. On a busy weekend, you’ll see a bunch of each running this way. All ages too, young kids love to get into that and have their mini rigs.
My daughter loves it too, but we ride in a 2018 4Runner TRD PRO; she’s a dream. The Shark star, Joan. She’s Calvary blue and got a great engine. We are ready to hit the road, the sand, the rock crawl, whatever we throw at her.
For the Salton trip, we went with a friend so we could chase and camp together. We chose Pole Line Rd. to start as it’s the main drag if you ever get turned around. We took that to Bus Pass and other trails as we found them in the foothills. The twists and turns of the canyons are beautiful in their semi-secret way. After the new course started getting a little too tight and got too dark, we headed to camp.
We usually pick a camp next to a lovely ravine or a sand wall. This time we got lucky and a friend phoned that we could stay at his new place in town. It was right next to Pole Line Rd! So we got lucky with a house. Wonderful to be so close to the trails. The following day after a quick breakfast, we headed out again toward the badlands some more to creep out of the hills onto a wash, aired up our tires, and headed on the paved road back home. Quick, easy offroad adventure.
See you out there!!
